Relevant Guidelines to keep in mind
- Detailed explanation of Good Publication Practice (GPP), International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) guidelines, and the importance of maintaining high ethical standards in authorship, sponsorship, potential conflicts of interest and publication.
Checklists for Different Study Types (RCT-CONSORT, Observational/RWE-STROBE, etc)
- Understanding the essential checklists and guidelines for reporting different types of clinical studies, such as randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies.
Preparation Essentials
- What do I need before starting? Essential documentation and ethical approvals required before publication, including the registration of studies on platforms like ClinicalTrials.gov.
Publication Strategy
- How to develop a publication strategy, including selecting appropriate journals based on impact factor, audience, peer-review processes, and other metrics.
Communication with Editors and Reviewers
- Effective communication strategies with journal editors and reviewers to facilitate a smoother review process and enhance manuscript acceptance rates.
IMRAD Structure
- In-depth analysis of the IMRAD (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) structure, with practical examples to illustrate each section’s purpose and content.
Reader-Centred Writing Approach
- Techniques for adopting a reader-centred approach to writing, ensuring clarity, coherence, and engagement in scientific manuscripts.
Developing a Coherent Concept using the “problem statement” approach
- What is a “problem statement”.
- How to formulate problem statements focusing on the purpose of the manuscript rather than the study, to develop a cohesive and compelling concept for your article.
Data Selection
- Guidance on selecting and presenting data effectively to support your research findings, according to the problem statement.
Concept Outline Development
- Steps to expand problem statements into comprehensive concept outlines to organize and streamline the writing process.
Effective Title Writing
- Crafting impactful and descriptive titles that accurately reflect the content and attract readers.
Detailed Outlining
- Utilizing reporting guidelines to create detailed outlines that ensure all necessary information is included, properly placed, and presented logically.
This course is specifically designed for professionals in pharmaceutical companies, medical science liaisons, medical advisors, scientific writers, medical writers, publication manager, scientific communicators, researchers, clinicians, and medical information professionals involved in writing or managing the publication of manuscripts for peer-reviewed medical journals.
Participant experience
Participants need to be familiar with the basics of clinical research and medical writing. However, no writing or publishing experience is necessary (that’s what the course is for!).

Arianna Ferrini
Dr Arianna Ferrini is a freelance medical writer and science communicator. She holds a PhD in Tissue Engineering and an MRes in Biomedical Research and Cardiovascular Sciences from Imperial College London (UK), an MSc in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and a BSc in Biotechnology from the University of Florence (Italy). She is the Director of Communications of the Association of Italian Scientists in the UK (AISUK) and the chair of the European Section of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS-EU). She holds a certificate for “Writing in the Science” from Stanford University (USA), a “Foundational Skills for Communicating about Health” certificate from the University of Michigan (USA) and a Diploma in Editing and Proofreading from the Centre of Excellence (UK). She has published more than 10 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals such as the Journal of Clinical Investigation and Advanced Materials.
After 12+ years of biomedical research experience in the UK, Italy and the USA, in 2020, she translated her technical knowledge and passion for communication into solutions for the medical and scientific community and the wider public. She specialises in Medical Education and works with clients worldwide, offering independent medical writing and science communication consulting services to businesses and individuals that want to capture valuable and meaningful insights from scientific data and spread the message to ultimately translate new research findings into healthcare solutions. Her clients include Johnson & Johnson, Langland, OLM Diagnostics, EPG Health, Regeneus, FirstWord Pharma, Editage and Edanz. As part of her work, she delivers interactive workshops and webinars to academic institutions and organisations covering scientific writing, publication processes and science communication strategies for different audiences.
