Huge amounts of scientific information are available in the public domain. Scientific and medical researchers and medical writers need to be able to access current reliable information in order to prepare good quality accurate documents. The aim of this workshop is to enable you:

  • to understand the scope and limitations of the different types of information sources
  • to determine how and where to obtain the information
  • to identify the most relevant and reliable information sources
  • to develop effective search strategies
  • to become confident in using general search engines such as Google Scholar effectively
  • to become confident in using PubMed to search MEDLINE effectively including the use of advanced search techniques and Medical Subject Headings (MESH)

       

      The workshop will be divided into 2 online sessions.

      Session 1

      • different types of information sources
      • on-line databases, and web sites
      • the different database providers
      • types of information available from on-line databases
      • how to choose the most relevant databases and web sites.

      Session 2

      • developing search strategies
      • using Google effectively
      • using PubMed to search MEDLINE
        •  understanding Medical Subject Headings (MESH)
        • advanced searching techniques

      Participants will have the opportunity to see searches carried out using MEDLINE and Google Scholar live on-line during the training and to see the effects of different ways of searching. Detailed information on how to conduct complex searches in specific databases, including MEDLINE, is outside the scope of this workshop.

      This course will be of use to all medical researchers and writers who need to obtain specific medical information in order to complete their writing tasks.

       

      Participant experience 

      Participants need to be familiar with the basics of scientific/clinical research. No previous experience of literature searching is required.

      Training will be in the form of an interactive workshop. It will include presentations, group exercises and live on-line searches of MEDLINE and Google Scholar.

      Alison Rapley

      Freelance Medical Writing Trainer

      Alison Rapley has worked in the Pharmaceutical Industry for over 30 years. She has degree in physiology and biochemistry and a postgraduate diploma in library and information studies. She began her career as a medical information specialist and continued to provide medical information to clients and colleagues whilst working as a medical writer, manager and finally director in the Medical Writing department of PAREXEL, a large Contract Research Organisation. Alison has provided training in Medical Writing and Medical Information throughout her career. She has been an EMWA workshop leader since 2001, was  President from May 2016 – 17, and a member of their Education and Professional Development Committee from 2018-2020. Since leaving PAREXEL in 2014, Alison has been providing freelance training to clients on an occasional basis.
