European Statistical Forum

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Is European Statistical Forum held annually?

Yes. European Statistical Forum is an annual biostatistics conference held each autumn in European locations. Each edition focuses on current developments in clinical trial design, statistical methodology, and regulatory expectations relevant to biostatisticians and clinical development professionals.

What is the difference between individual edition pages and this main page?

This page provides an overview of European Statistical Forum as an annual biostatistics conference series, covering its history, recurring themes, and professional community. Individual edition pages offer specific details about that year’s programme, speakers, registration, and focused topics. This main page serves as the canonical reference for the overall European Statistical Forum conference series.

Who should attend European Statistical Forum?

The biostatistics conference is designed for biostatisticians, pharmacometricians, clinical development scientists, data scientists, regulatory affairs specialists, and anyone responsible for clinical trial design, statistical analysis, or regulatory evaluation of clinical research in pharmaceutical companies, CROs, academic institutions, or regulatory agencies.

Does European Statistical Forum cover both frequentist and Bayesian approaches?

Yes. European Statistical Forum provides comprehensive coverage of both frequentist and Bayesian statistical frameworks. Sessions demonstrate when each approach is most appropriate, how to implement both methods in practice, and strategies for regulatory acceptance. The conference recognizes that modern clinical trial design often requires flexible use of multiple statistical paradigms depending on development context.

Is European Statistical Forum relevant for early-career biostatisticians?

Yes. While statistical content is rigorous, European Statistical Forum is designed to accommodate varying expertise levels. Sessions provide foundational context before advanced topics, and the conference offers excellent learning opportunities for early-career biostatisticians to understand real-world application of statistical methods in drug development. Networking with senior statisticians provides invaluable professional development.

How does European Statistical Forum address gene therapy trials specifically?

European Statistical Forum dedicates substantial attention to statistical challenges unique to gene therapy clinical trials, including small sample sizes, one-time interventions requiring long-term follow-up, ethical constraints on randomization, and limited natural history data. Sessions provide practical guidance on designing robust gene therapy trials using Bayesian methods, adaptive designs, external controls, and other innovative approaches that meet regulatory expectations despite inherent study design constraints.
