Crafting an excellent medical literature search and identifying reliable information resources is essential to locating the best, most relevant resources to inform reports and dossiers.

Remember, the key to success is in the details, and with the proper techniques, you can unlock a treasure trove of information that will help you create informed and impactful reports.

So, take your time, be thorough, and don't be afraid to utilise all available resources to create the best possible outcome.

This workshop will be divided into two sessions.

Session 1 – Discover:

  • different types of information sources
  • reliable websites and databases for medical information
  • what types of information you may find from databases and websites
  • tools for choosing reliable/relevant resources

Session 2 – Learn how to:

  • create search strategies to optimize results from your resource
  • effectively target your Google search results for medical information
  • search Medline via PubMed, including:
    • how to use the advanced search
    • how to utilize/apply Medical Subject Headings (Mesh) or other controlled vocabulary

Participants will have live demonstrations of searches in both Medline and Google Scholar, and explore the ways changing your search strategy changes your results.

Note that instruction for creating complicated search strategies is not covered in this workshop.

Rienne Schinner

Senior Library Services Specialist, Evidera

Rienne Schinner, MLIS, is a Senior Library Services Specialist working remotely from Wooster, Ohio, USA. Her role at Evidera includes answering reference questions, database searching, retrieving full text articles, maintaining journal and database subscriptions, and serving as staff liaison for library-oriented project needs. Prior to Evidera, Ms. Schinner worked as a temporary librarian for the American Heart Association, and as a librarian at Doctor Evidence LLC. Her primary responsibilities at other jobs included creating searches for quick reference questions, systematic reviews or meta-analyses, as well as performing/managing the initial title/abstract screening process. She actively collaborated with the team for scoping searches and defining scope of work, as well as assist with citations and the final reporting of results.

Ms. Schinner has spent her library career dedicated to health information, with positions at hospitals, colleges, and medical schools prior to her corporate positions.
