Introduzione

There are multiple courses about slide deck design and, more recently, a myriad of templates that you can adapt to your presentations. Nonetheless, bad slide decks are still around. You know how they look: overcrowded, poor contrast, and/or minuscule font, creating an immense urge to look anywhere but the slides! Why is that?

There are also presentations in which the slides are quite pleasant to look at, the speaker is fairly proficient, but you get out of the presentation not quite knowing what was the main point—or worse, having a wrong idea on what the presentation was about!

As biomedical communication experts, we want to create good slides, either for ourselves or when designing them for someone else. But it’s not enough to have good-looking slides, they have to serve the purpose they were created for, i.e., to inform, engage, encourage action, or all three.

This workshop is about designing professional-looking, easily read and effective slides and slide decks. But it’s also about how to plan and create a slide deck that helps you achieve your goals, leveraging storytelling to craft a memorable, meaningful presentation.

This workshop covers:

  • The purpose of slide decks: Why good design and structure matter.
  • Live vs. on-demand presentations: Adjusting your approach to different contexts.
  • Planning your presentation: Understanding your audience and refining your message.
  • Building a storyline: Structuring your slide deck for clear flow and impact.
  • Design essentials: Text, graphs, images, fonts, bullets, spacing, and alignment.
  • Visual clarity: Choosing backgrounds, colours, contrasts, and resolutions.
  • Avoiding distractions: Effective use of animations, text, and speech.
  • Tools for success: Exploring software options like PowerPoint and Canva.
  • Proofing techniques: Ensuring a polished, professional finish.

Exercises/discussion

To reinforce learning, participants will engage in:

Discussions:

  • The pros and cons of pre-made templates.
  • Challenges in designing effective slides.
  • Experiences with PowerPoint, Canva, and other tools.

Exercises:

  • Define your presentation’s core message based on the target audience.
  • Develop a storyline that aligns with your message and audience needs.
  • Apply design principles to a sample slide deck for peer feedback.

This workshop is for anyone using slide decks to communicate biomedical information: medical writers, employees of pharmaceutical and medical device companies, medical practitioners, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

Participant experience

Basic familiarity with Microsoft PowerPoint or other tools to prepare slide decks.

  • The workshop is intended to be a ‘two-way’ learning and discussion experience (not a webinar); questions and subsequent discussion are welcome at any time during the workshop
  • Lecturer will deliver short presentations and use slide examples
  • Breakout rooms for smaller groups to consider/discuss an issue
  • Polling questions
