Why take this course?

Successfully publishing peer-reviewed journal articles is essential for publishing and creating trust in biomedical productsand research. Publishing is also required by ethical, transparency, and regulatory guidelines. However, writing publicationsand getting them accepted in peer-reviewed journals can be time-consuming, complicated, and frustrating.If you need to publish in international peer-reviewed scientific journals, this 2-day workshop is a must. The intensive,focused training in this workshop will give you the tools to improve your writing, save time, and maximize your chances of success.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who needs to publish or manage the publication of scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.This includes medical advisors, scientific writers, medical writers, medical liaisons, researchers, clinicians, and medical information professionals. The course will benefit all professionals preparing scientific articles, even the most experienced.

Participant experiense

Participants need to be familiar with the basics of clinical research and medical writing.


Day 1: The basics of publications – instruction + practice

  • The basics of scientific communication
  • The environment of scientific communications
  • Understanding the main objectives in scientific writing and using them to improve your writing
  • Basic grammatical techniques in English to improve your writing


  • Organising your writing projects (includes authorship management and review cycles)
  • What belongs where in an article and how to organise each section
  • Using guidelines to simplify your work
  • Focusing your writing by using problem statements and outlining
  • Journal selection
  • Publication planning
  • Authorship and acknowledgment
  • Reviews and approval
  • Communicating with editors and reviewers

Day 2: Individualized and group work

Participants are asked to bring an article they are working on or a study report from which to build an article.If attendees cannot bring their own materials, they will be provided with data and basic information to create a manuscript.


  • Individualized and group work on the selection of target journals and on theintroduction/background, and methods


  • Individualized and group work on the results, discussion/conclusion,title, abstract, and authors.

What will we do in the workshop?

This is a 2-day interactive workshop featuring a full day of focused lessons and exercises, and a second full day of intensiveindividual and group work. This hands-on, interactive format provides the richest experience and best chance for success.Learning modules include communicating your message, organising your writing projects, basic grammatical techniquesin English, optimal organisation and flow of the different sections in an article, journal selection, and best practices forcommunicating your message and communicating with reviewers.During the second day of the workshop, the instructors work with attendees on manuscripts they wish to write or arecurrently writing. If attendees cannot bring their own materials, they will be provided with data and basic information tocreate a manuscript. Attendees are therefore expected to bring a computer and any relevant source material (protocols,study reports, slides, abstracts, draft manuscripts, etc.).Attendees will benefit from the perspective and experience of two international experts in publication writing andmanagement. Between them, they have successfully published many hundreds of articles across a wide variety of scientific and clinical specialties.

At the end of the course the participant will be able to:

  • Plan and write the outline of an article
  • Select a target journal
  • Manage authorship and internal review cycles
  • Communicate effectively with editors and reviewers

Lecturer’s Bio

Andrea Rossi has a degree in Biology from Florence University. After a brief spell at theUniversity, he started working in the Italian affiliate of Eli Lilly as a Clinical Research Associate.In the years that followed he was responsible for Statistics, Health Outcomes and MedicalInformation. Andrea has been working as Medical Writer since 2003. He is author of morethan 350 disclosures and acknowledged for his contribution in several others. From 2007 to2009 he was on the coordination board of BIAS (Biometristi Italiani Associati) and has beenan European Medical Writers Association (EMWA) member since 2004. Andrea acts as trainerfor statistics and medical writing in some Italian schools for specialisation in oncology, andhas been a speaker at national and international conferences. Andrea leads workshops forand is past-president of EMWA.

Phillip Leventhal, PhD is a scientific writer at 4Clinics in Paris, France where he specialises inpublications writing and medical communications. He has more than 10 years’ experienceas a scientific writer, has written and edited hundreds of peer-reviewed articles, and hasworked extensively with, and trained, non-native English speakers in scientific writing.Prior to transitioning to scientific writing, Phil worked for 15 years in the United Statesas a biochemist and cell biologist in academic and pharmaceutical research. Phil is theEditor-in-Chief of the journal Medical Writing and a member of the executive committeeof the European Medical Writers Association (EMWA). Phil also leads workshops for EMWAand several European institutions on publication writing, abstracts, and interpersonalcommunication in medical writing, and he is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Mastersin Professional Writing Program at New York University.
